Folate, serum
FOLAT

Folate is essential for synthesizing DNA and amino acids which are the building blocks of proteins.  Folate deficiency causes anemia and has been associated with sensory loss and neuropsychiatric changes including depression.  Deficiencies may be caused by dietary inadequacies, poor absorption, treatment with certain drugs, and by conditions that are associated with increased need for folate such as pregnancy and liver disease. This test is usually not indicated in the apparently-healthy individual on a typical diet found in the United States.  Your report will include the amount of folate measured in your blood, reference values (the upper and lower limits for most healthy people of your age and gender), and an interpretation of your results with general recommendations.

Special Instructions:  None.

Vitamin B12
VB12

Vitamin B12 (Cyanocobalamin) is needed for the metabolism of amino acids which are the building blocks of proteins. Vitamin B12 deficiency causes serious neurological disorders and anemia. Deficiencies can result from dietary deficiencies or inability to absorb the vitamin. The measurement of Vitamin B12 in the blood does not always reveal a vitamin B12 deficiency. A homocysteine test is often a more sensitive measurement for Vitamin B12 deficiency. This test is usually not indicated in the apparently-healthy individual on a typical diet found in the United States. Your report will include the amount of vitamin B12 measured in your blood, reference values (the upper and lower limits for most healthy people of your age and sex), and an interpretation of your results with general recommendations.

Special Instructions: None.
