This test measures the amount of glucose (a type of sugar) in the blood. In diabetes, blood sugar will be elevated above normal. In hypoglycemia, blood sugar will be below normal. Your report will include your blood glucose value, reference values based on Ameican Diabetic Association guidelines, and an interpretation with general recommendations.
Special Instructions: You should be fasting for 10 to 12 hours before your blood is drawn for this test.

Hemoglobin A1c is a compound that is formed by glucose binding to hemoglobin. This test is not used as a screen for diabetes, it is used in patients with an established diagnosis. The level of hemoglobin A1c is an indication of blood glucose control over the preceeding couple of months. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends that stable patients on oral glucose lowering medication have hemoglobin A1c measured at least twice per year.

This test measures trace amounts of albumin (a protein) in the urine. Microalbumin above upper reference values in diabetic patients is a warning sign for developing kidney disease as a result of diabetes.
